Post-doc position in energy geotechnics at Aarhus University (Denmark)

Applications are welcome for a 1.5-year post-doc position (with extension opportunities) to investigate the cyclic behaviour of a geomembrane energy storage system. The successful candidate will investigate the cyclic behaviour of energy storage technology recently developed in Denmark.

Candidates should possess a PhD degree in Civil/Geotechnical Engineering or related areas, proven experience in numerical modelling, preferably including soil-structure interaction problems and cyclic loading, and excellent knowledge of soil mechanics and foundation engineering. Acquaintance with the finite element software ABAQUS® is appreciated (but not mandatory).

A more detailed description of the project can be found in the attached pdf.

The project will be conducted in a team with Professor Lars Vabbersgaard Andersen, Professor (Docent) Kenny Kataoka Sørensen and Assistant Professor Hans Henning Stutz. For more information about this vacancy, please contact Hans Henning Stutz (Main supervisor) hhs@eng.au.dk

The position will be available until it is filled.

E-UNSAT 2020 Lisbon – postponed to 19-21 October 2020

Due to the COV-19 outbreak in all European countries in the last weeks, in agreement with the Chair and the Secretary of the TC-106, E-UNSAT 2020 conference to be held in Lisbon, Portugal, will be postponed. The new dates have been fixed to October 19-21, 2020.
Postponing the conference was necessary to allow for safe travelling and enjoying the event. Hopefully this delay will be enough for the emergency to be over. Further information can be found at https://eunsat2020.tecnico.ulisboa.pt

Two Post-doctoral researcher opportunities at the University of Nottingham (UK)

The Nottingham Centre for Geomechanics (NCG) is currently undertaking two large multi-disciplinary projects related to investigating the behaviour of made-ground consisting of coal-mining spoil. NCG brings together expertise from the worlds of civil, geotechnical, and mining engineering as well as mathematics and material sciences to solve all forms of soil and rock-related design and construction problems. The projects are funded by the European Commission Research Fund for Coal and Steel (RFCS) and include project partners from across Europe.

The NCG is looking to recruit two post-doctoral researchers who will support the work of these RFCS projects as well as support the wider work of the research group. Although the NCG will consider any candidate with a strong fundamental geotechnical background, they are particularly interested in candidates who have experience with element testing, numerical modelling (FEA/FDM) or centrifuge modelling.

Candidates will have a first degree in Civil Engineering or cognate subject and will have been awarded a PhD (or have submitted their thesis for examination), ideally in an area of Geotechnical Engineering. The successful candidate will have good presentation and report writing skills. A good publication record will be an advantage but its absence should not hinder applications from those who have recently submitted their theses.

The session welcomes contributions about shallow geothermal energy applications, including traditional closed- and open-loop borehole heat exchangers as well as so-called energy geostructures (e.g. thermo-active foundations, walls, tunnels).
Different types of analysis and approaches are relevant to this session, spanning from the evaluation of ground thermal properties to the mapping of shallow geothermal potential, from energy storage and district heating to sustainability issues and consequences of the geothermal energy use, from the design of new heat exchangers and installation techniques to the energy and thermo-(hydro-) mechanical performance of energy geostructures. Contributions based on experimental, analytical and numerical modelling are welcome as well as interventions about legislative aspects.
